Antique Gun And Powder Flask Repairs

In good condition, these guns are valuable antique collectors' pieces. Others that require a bit of work can often be cleaned and restored by amateurs. Cast-metal parts or wooden blanks, which can be shaped to replace damaged or missing stocks, can be obtained from specialist suppliers. Even old gunpowder explodes, so be sure that any gun being repaired is not loaded. Insert the ramrod, or a length of wood, into the barrel to check if there is any obstruction. If there is, remove it with a modern shotgun-cleaning rod that has a screw tip, or use an ordinary steel screw soldered to a stiff piece of wire. Screw the rod gently into the obstruction and pull it out like a cork. Wash the barrel with hot water and dry it.

To dismantle the gun, first half-cock it, then remove the screw which holds the cock (in the flintlock) or the hammer (in the percussion type) and slide it off. Unscrew the pan-cover pivot and screw securing the spring beneath the pan: remove the parts. Unscrew the holding bolts or screws and remove the lock-plate. Several screwdrivers may be needed: the blade must fit each screw or bolt slot exactly so as not to burr the screw or bolt. If they are hard to remove, applying a bit of penetrating oil will do the trick. To dismantle a flintlock mechanism, loosen the four screws that hold the mainspring, sear, searspring and the bridle. Compress the mainspring (in a small hand vice), take out the spring screw and remove the spring. The pin at the rear of the mainspring engages in the lock-plate and the other end of the spring engages in the toe of the tumbler.

Remove rust with fine emery paper or powder. Make sure to remove all abrasive powder after cleaning. Smear all parts with petroleum jelly and reassemble. Press the tumbler down to the fired position so that the end of the mainspring goes over it. Put the cock on and pull it back to the half-cocked position so that the tumbler toe compresses the mainspring. Refit the rest of the pieces in reverse order to removal.

To clean the barrel, first remove it from the stock. A metal extension of the barrel - the tang - runs into the stock. Remove the tang screws and any retaining bands or pins. The trigger guard, butt cap and ramrod pipes are screwed or pinned and must be removed with extreme care. If the screws do not yield to penetrating oil, leave them alone - it will be a job for an antique restorer to drill them out. Barrels and other metal parts can be cleaned with a mixture of oil and paraffin. Re-polish all parts with progressively finer abrasives; finish with jewellers' emery or crocus paper. Some barrels may have been blued to prevent rust and, special bluing fluid can be bought from a gunsmith. Try not leaving fingerprints on the barrel as this causes rusting.

Clean the stock with steel wool and linseed oil. If the stock is broken, mend with epoxy resin mixed to a paste with matching stained sawdust. If the stock is beyond minor repairs, a new stock may be fashioned with an entirely new piece of wood. Small dents in the stock can be extracted by using hot steam from an iron. Place a cloth over the dent and apply the hot iron.

Powder flasks were made in hundreds of designs and several materials. However, the majority of antique flasks were made pear-shaped and made from tin, brass or Britannia metal. Metal flasks were usually made in two halves soldered together. If the seam has parted, find out what alloy the flask is made of before trying to re-solder it. A simple test is to put a few drops of water in a cup and add an equal number of drops of nitric acid, obtainable from a chemist. Put a drop of the solution on the metal to reveal the colour. Red-brown indicates bronze; yellow and yellow-red, brass; dark grey, pewter; and bright silver-grey, Britannia metal. To polish the antique flask, use the technique appropriate to the material it is made of. Many powder flasks have very fine detailed etchings, embossings or engravings that give them their unique look. An antique gun without its matching or specific powder flask loses its appeal when antique collectors are looking to add to their collection.

The antique Ohio electric car is a vintage car now. The Ohio Electric Car Company produced electric cars, which were mainly bought by rich customers during the late 1800s and early part of 1900s. Electric vehicles were also produced by Edison, Anthony, Bakers and others during the early 1900s and even out-sold the conventional vehicles for some time! But due to technological limitations, besides other factors, these vehicles were limited to a maximum speed of 32 km/hr.

However, in 1913, Cadillac introduced the electric starter car, the sales of electric cars experienced a down slide and soon antique Ohio electric cars became just that, antiques. Now, electric cars are more popular than they have ever been with the fear of global warming and the increasing cost of gas.

How to make your Home Interior Decorating successful?

Whenever I think of any design, be it interior design or product design, a few things very naturally come up in my mind. These are in the form of questions.

The best part is, answers to these questions can give rise to a very

successful design in itself. Let's see how.

If I am planning to design a piece of furniture, let's say a double bed, immediate I start relating to what I already know about double beds, some picture/image I have already seen, something I have seen in some furniture shop, etc...

Then I start thinking about what material I should think about, the budget, dimensions, age group of people who are going to use it, etc... If you answer these questions one by one on a paper, you will get a blueprint of the design process, so that you can convert in into technical drawings, with all the joinery details and finally the product.

Amongst above mentioned questions some are directly related to function

of the double bed as a piece of furniture.

What does this mean?

When I ask myself, what should be the dimensions of a double bed? I have very little freedom to decide the dimensions of the bed, because there are certain norms to be followed in order to serve it's basic function and that's comfort.

But what if I say that I will keep the overall surface area of the bed same , but make it round in plan. Will it be ok..

Now here I am trying to achieve both function and aesthetics, without sacrificing the comfort of the person who will use it. So during any design process there will be times when the designer need to take some decisions where he has to keep aside his wildest ideas and pay attention to function first.

That's why the true success of an interior design project is a good balance between function and aesthetics.

Expressing this kind of balance through design is not an easy task,

because function is universally accepted, but aesthetics, not always.

What does this mean?

Beauty is always relative. A washbasin has a common universal function of an appliance to be used for washing hands, but it's beauty is relative. What is beautiful for me, might not hold true for you.

So a design expression can have a unique style of the designer himself. It is possible that the designer is more comfortable with certain kinds of materials/finishes/color schemes, etc.. which can reflect in his designs.

In spite of these personal touches a good designs always caters the needs of the user first. A good designer has a certain kind of convincing power in his/her style which he uses to expresses in the design without sacrificing the likes/dislikes of the user.

There are designers who are more comfortable in designing only a certain kind space such as bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms, public spaces such as restaurants, clubs, gymnasiums.

Of course this is entirely of a personal choice, but there is this same message in their designs, shell out your ego and design for the best parameters with worst possibilities taken into considerations. This is what gives birth to a great design.

The binding, the pages, whether dog-eared or torn, or God forbid, missing. The pages may have notes written on them. (Which can often be valuable in themselves if penned by a famous person or under unusual circumstances) or they may be damaged or stained or any number of factors which will affect their desirability. In the same way if a book is signed by it's author this usually increases it's price, although in the modern world not necessarily as "book signings" are all too common as a marketing tool and have helped to downplay the importance of a signed edition. All of these factors contribute to the overall value of your antique book.

The overall availability is a factor in price but is not necessarily the main factor as a book may be hard to find but not desirable. In other words it may be rare but nobody wants it! Confusing? Yes it can be. It is prudent to consult a dealer to appraise your antique book whether for insurance purposes or because you are attempting to sell it. In the final analysis, antiques are always only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it.

Appraisals Dealers usually need to see the book itself in order to identify and appraise it. You may submit photographs if you cannot see the dealer in person due to distance or time. They will require usually a photograph of the title page, the back side of the title page (also called the copyright page), the first and last pages of text, and the outer covers and spine in order to evaluate an individual copy. It is best to have very close up, quality photographs if you must go this route. If you are not proficient with a digital camera, ask one of your friends to do it for you. The popularity of digital cameras today makes quality photos easy to accomplish. Do not try and photocopy the book! This produces very poor results and may in fact damage the book due to the pressure exerted upon the spine in this process.

You often hear the phrase "first edition" in reference to books and this can influence the price of the book if there were, in fact more than one edition! Many times there were not. Be careful when someone touts the first edition status of an antique book and attempt to determine for yourself if there were indeed subsequent editions. Again remember to use all of the resources online and elsewhere to obtain valuable and often free information on your antique book. There are several national societies of book dealers, "antiquarians" and of course appraisers that you may take advantage of in the search for information. There are also book collecting societies that you may investigate. Take your time and learn all you can before you buy or sell your antique book.

You may get your car appraised if you think that its value is much more than what the book states. The appraisal process includes the car becoming officially recorded with a list other cars that are considered to be under that same value bracket.

To select a proper appraiser you could contact the American Society of Appraisers (or ASA for short). When you are selecting your candidate, look at their resumes. It is best to have an appraiser that has worked with your make of vehicle in the past, and knows a lot about it. Check their references for more information about them.

The appraiser checks the vehicle thoroughly for the final report. If she can, she will run the car and take note to the condition. She will also be taking a lot of pictures, to add to her detailed document. She will include a record of similar vehicles with their prices. The appraiser bases her list on various sources such as car price guides, advertisements, auction and sale results; and other documents related to the car.

In addition to an appraiser, the insurance policy company needs information such as make, color, model, body style, and year. Engine number and Vehicle Identification Number (or VIN) could be asked for. Cars such as a Ferraris or Corvette must have a VIN for verification.

Another good reason for putting your classic or antique car under the proper insurance policy is that they would most likely understand what the car needs and what concerns you have about your vehicle.

There are three types of insurance for an antique or classic car. There is the actual cash value (ACV); agreed value (AV); and stated value (SV). If your insurance policy is under the heading of actual cash value (or ACV), then the value is set for the cost of the car at the time of being insured. This value decreases with time, if the insurance is needed, an insurance claim adjuster will decide how much the ACV is.

With the stated value (or SV), the insurance pays either the fees related to damage of the vehicle or the ACV depending on which costs less. The AV is the better of the three. When you get your AV policy, you are guaranteed a degree of coverage regardless, if anything happens to your vehicle.

California wasnt always attached to the west coast of the North American continent. It used to be an island. At least, thats what mapmakers, mostly European, believed for about 100 years, from around 1650 to 1750. So thats how they drew it on their maps.
The Island of California, as it is commonly called, is just one of the innumerable collecting niches that are possible in the increasingly popular field of antique map collecting.

Antique map collecting is a tradition that goes back hundreds of years, which is perhaps one reason why there is such an enormous amount of material, from the affordable to the prohibitively expensive, in circulation today. Two reasons for the popularity of antique map collecting are that antique maps appeal to a broad spectrum of people (for a variety of reasons) and they make very attractive framed pieces that can be enjoyed by many.

The wide range of antique maps available today means that a novice can easily enter the field, although hopefully armed with a little caution and common sense. The best place to begin is with some reading. Two excellent books for the beginning collector are Collecting Old Maps by Francis J. The unwritten reality of letter writing

You may wonder why I have chosen this title of this post. Well from my experience is that it is really hard to put the feeling into words about what letter writing means to me. Letter writing is becoming a lost art on many levels. It is fading into the background of society. It is still practised by many people. It is those people that I am looking to connect with. I have been told by many people whom have read my posts that they feel the same way about letter writing as I do. I want to hear from those people what they feel; I want to hear their words.
I think that it is so important that we embrace the things that we are passionate about. In this case, I want people from all walks of life, all over the world. Put a pen to paper that is letter writing; pen pals, snail mail whatever it is you call it and tell your story about what writing and receiving actual physical mail in the mail box means to you.
For me I love the whole process from finding kwel and interesting stationary, note cards, ticklopes (they are so cute) to stickers, to colour full envelopes to tuckins to put in the envelopes. For me it is to make others happy to see a letter to them in their box.

I want to hear from you yes you the one reading this post. I know you love to get a letter addressed to you? Who doesnt? Is there some that you have kept? If so? Why? When? How? Yes I want all the 5 Ws answered. The reason is I think that it is important to have book that expresses just how important this art of letter writing is to our society. I have heard from a publisher that they are interested. Now I just have to create the masterpiece called the unwritten reality of the lost art of letterwriting.

Help me help shine the light on this amazing gift so that it doesnt disappear from the future. If you want more info please feel free to contact me. I have more to share as always. If you can think of other places to post or spread the word please do. This is dedicated to you. I would appreciate any help in getting the word out. I dont think that I could do this book justice with out having fellow letter writers sharing their experiences about the passion of this amazing hobby.

If ever there were a room in your house that needs good lighting, it?s the bathroom! Bathroom lighting must cover the gamut of every lighting situation you can imagine--from soft lighting in the morning as you wake up, to bright lighting for doing makeup and shaving. Bathroom lighting should come from many sources and directions and provide shadow free illumination as a task light. Who wants to put on makeup or shave with conflicting shadows on your face from poorly designed bathroom light fixtures?

Every bathroom lighting design should include a general light, a frontal light and a good closet lighting.

General bathroom lighting

General Lighting for a bathroom can come from a chandelier, ceiling mount fixture or recessed lighting fixtures. Whichever way you go you must have a dimmer control to regulate the intensity. Chandeliers lend more of a decorative element to the space, where a surface mount ceiling light is more discreet and less of a statement. Recessed lights on the other hand, disappear into the ceiling and provide the cleanest look for creating good bathroom lighting. Some people like to mix fluorescent lights with incandescent lights for bathroom lighting because it helps ladies choose the right color makeup and clothes for the office. Face it, most offices use fluorescent lighting, so dressing in a similar environment is the best way overcome that challenge.

Frontal bathroom lighting.

Frontal lighting can be defined as any bathroom light source mounted on a mirror or adjacent to a vanity table at eye level that illuminates ones face for makeup or shaving. To be successful in lighting for bathrooms, you need one bathroom makeup light on each side for balance, so your face is evenly illuminated without harsh shadows. Wall sconces, vanity lights and small candlestick table lamps are good examples of bathroom lighting fixtures that provide good frontal lighting. Verify the correct mounting height of your wall fixtures because once the mirror man cuts the holes you will be forced to live with it. That can be a costly mistake to fix. Again, the use of dimmer controls is highly recommended so that light levels can be adjusted for the circumstances.

Bathroom Closet Lighting

What would a bathroom be without a good closet close by? Bathroom lighting and closet lighting have one characteristic in common; they must have enough light and produce the right color of light. How many times have you struggled with finding blue and black socks in your closet or bathroom? Bathroom lighting and closet lighting, when done well can solve these problems. Halogen bathroom lighting produces a pure white color which is good for deciphering colors. Ever forget to turn off your closet light? Motion detectors can replace wall switches and automate that process for you.

Remember that well designed bathroom lighting does not happen by chance. Room colors, ceiling heights, mirrors and daylight from windows all contribute to the design process. Light colored surfaces reflect light and make bathroom lighting more useful. Dark colored walls and surfaces on the other hand, absorb light and require higher wattage levels to compensate for lack of reflectivity. Just remember, that you can never have too much light in the bathroom.
